Lewis and Betty Cox share a passion for hot rods. More than just a typical hobby, the couple has made hot rods a way to share their love for God.
About a year ago, Lewis Cox approached Rusk First Baptist Church youth minister Jason Hoffman with an idea of using hot rod restoration to minister the church’s youth.
“I always wanted to do something like this,” Lewis Cox said. “It’s a lot of fun and could appeal to a lot of different kids, even kids who don’t normally come to church.”
Once the first project was approved, youth from the ages of 16-20 consistently showed up on Sundays to work on the old Ford. Hoffman, the Coxes, and several local officials supervised the project as the youngsters conducted a detailed restoration.
“It’s been really cool,” commented Livia Rodrigues, an exchange student from Brazil who took part in the program. “I live in a big city, so we don’t get to do stuff like this there. I’m learning more about cars than I ever thought possible. I really like the welding—that’s awesome.”
Hoffman showered Cox’s devised approach with praises.
“This gives us a chance to talk about life and how God fits into it, learn about cars and get our hands dirty,” Hoffman said. “We’re so blessed to have the Coxes, and all the rest of the parents and adults, willing to give their time and knowledge for these kids.”
